4 labourers die while cleaning chemical tank of Chiripal Group in Dholka

Four labourers died while cleaning a chemical tank of a private company Chiripal Group in Dholka on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The labourers are believed to have been suffocated to death after leakage of poisonous gas in the tank of Chiripal Industries.

Police said they followed one another when the first one failed to respond to their call. Investigation is still on in the matter. MD of the company Jyotiprasad Chiripal did not respond to calls from Gujarat Exclusive. A message to him also went unanswered. This story will be updated with his response as and when it comes.

Earlier in February, seven workers had died in a fire at a denim factory in Narol road of Nandan Denim, which also belongs to the same group. Chiripal Group is a leading manufacturer of denim fabric in the country. Six people, including the owner and managing director of Chiripal Group, were booked for culpable homicide and negligence in that case. No arrests were made after the owners moved the High Court.

The chemical tank incident once again at the same company’s premises has raised questions about industrial safety at the firm’s various units as well as across Gujarat.

Photographs of the incident show workers sans any safety gear. It also begs the questions if the state has outsourced the matter of industrial safety to individual companies and has washed its hands off the whole issue.

Vav MLA Jignesh Mevani also questioned the incident in Dholka today and asked police to take strict action.

Earlier allegations were also made against the company that it was illegally dumping chemical water in the area.
