Four terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammad were eliminated by security forces on Thursday in a fierce gunfight near Jammu and Kashmir’s Nagrota.
The gunfight started at around 4.50 near a toll plaza in the Ban area of Nagrota on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. A truck was ferrying the terrorists to Kashmir. Police said they had intelligence inputs regarding the same and the truck was checked by policemen at the toll plaza.
Mukesh Singh, inspector general of police (Jammu), said the terrorists hiding in the truck lobbed grenades on security forces during the checking. A few grenades exploded inside the truck, which eventually caught fire. “Four terrorists were eliminated in the exchange of fire,” he said.
SOG officer got injured
A police officer also got injured in the gunfight. Special Operations Group officer Kuldeep Raj, 32, of Akhnoor in Jammu district was injured in the exchange of fire and has been hospitalised in GMCH Jammu with splinter injuries on the neck. His condition is stable.
A senior officer said the JeM terrorists adopted a similar modus-operandi of infiltrating from across the international border in the Jammu region before boarding a Kashmir bound truck on the Pathankot-Jammu national highway the preceding night.
“However, forces eliminated them in a swift operation,” he added. He also said that the terrorists are likely to have entered through fresh infiltration in the Samba sector.
CRPF’s spokesperson Shivnandan Singh equated Thursday’s gun battle with that of a January 31 incident when a group of terrorists opened fire on security forces at Ban toll plaza. In that incident, a gunfight ensued between the terrorists and security forces and three terrorists were eliminated, whereas a cop was injured.
