In a major cause of concern, the health ministry on Thursday informed that over 4.12 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.10 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases in India since the pandemic began last year.
The ministry also informed that over 16.25 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 19.55 lakh people were vaccinated on Wednesday.
India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.
2.30 lakh deaths due to COVID-19
Also, 3,980 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,30,168. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since the pandemic began last year.
Previously, the death toll had touched 3,780-mark on May 5.
1.72 crore patients recovered
Of the over 2.10 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 35.66 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 16.92 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.72 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.
Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 81.99 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May.
Over 29.67 crore samples tested
So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 29.67 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 19.23 lakh samples were tested on May 5. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.20 lakh samples was tested on April 29.
3,980 deaths in a day
Of the 3,980 deaths reported in a day, 920 deaths are from Maharashtra, 167 from Tamil Nadu and 346 from Karnataka. Eighty-five deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 353 deaths and West Bengal reported 103 deaths. Gujarat reported 133 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 71 deaths. Delhi reported 311 deaths. Punjab reported 180 deaths.
Sixteen deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 155 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 61 deaths. Fifty-two deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 52 deaths.
Fifty-five fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 127 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 141 deaths. Puducherry reported 18 deaths and 58 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
