Rajkot records earthquake of 4.1 magnitude


Rajkot recorded an earthquake of 4.1 magnitude on Tuesday afternoon.

The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said the epicentre of the tremor, which was recorded at 3:49 pm, was located 25 km east-northeast from Upleta town. The earthquake was recorded 14.5 km deep in the earth’s crust.

Local officials said no injury, casualty or damage was reported in the quake.

 Earlier on September 2, an earthquake of 4.1 magnitude was reported from Kutch. The quake was recorded at 2.09 pm with its epicentre 7 km North-North East from Dudhai in Kutch district. 

 Before that, a mild quake of 2.3 magnitude was reported in Jamnagar. The epicentre was 19 km East-North East from Lalpur in Jamnagar in Saurashtra

In the beginning of August, an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 on the Richter Scale was reported from Bharuch in south Gujarat.

 The quake was reported at 5:19 pm and people in parts of Bharuch city rushed out of their houses. No casualty or damage to property was reported in it.

Earlier quakes

On July 5 a 4.2 magnitude earthquake was reported in Bhachau in Kutch. Its epicentre was 14 km from Bhachau. It was preceded by four minor quakes of 1.8, 1.6, 1.7 and 2.1 magnitudes between 1.50 am and 4.32 pm.

That quake was also reported at 5.11 pm. The same region had on June 14 recorded an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude. This quake was felt across several parts of Saurashtra region.

Earthquake-prone region

Kutch district is located in a “very high risk” seismic zone and low-intensity earthquakes regularly occur there. Earlier Gujarat had in 2001 seen a massive earthquake, the third largest and second most destructive in India over the last two centuries.

Quake in Rajkot

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale hit Rajkot in Gujarat at 7:40 am on July 16. The epicentre of the quake was 22 km southwest of Rajkot. It was recorded at a depth of more than 10 kilometres.
