India recorded a whopping 3,900 positive cases and 195 deaths due to Covid19 in the last 24 hours, data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated. This is one of the biggest spikes in deaths and positive cases in the country. In all, India now has 46,433 cases and 1,568 fatalities due to the disease.
The spike comes amid easing of restrictions in several green and orange zones in the country. The opening of liquor shops and the resultant long lines with no consideration for social distancing has also raised questions about easing of restrictions and how it will impact India’s fight against the disease. The number of active cases among the total stands at 32,138.
The highest death toll in 24 hours was recorded in Tamil Nadu which saw 31 fatalities followed by Telangana and Karnataka which recorded 29 and 27 deaths respectively.
Punjab registered 23 deaths. The ministry said that 70% of the deaths due to the disease were a result of comorbidity. The highest number of confirmed cases were in Maharashtra (14,541), followed by Gujarat (5,804) and Delhi (4,898). Maharashtra and Gujarat also lead in the number of deaths in the country.
