Three photojournalists from Jammu and Kashmir – Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand— have won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography. All three work for the Associated Press and were awarded for their coverage of Jammu & Kashmir, particularly during the lockdown imposed on the state after the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
The imposition of the lockdown saw large scale violence. All the photojournalist recounted how difficult it had been for them to capture the images and most importantly ensure that it reached the offices in the wake on Internet and phone ban in Kashmir. They said they often hid their cameras and took shelter at stranger’s house while doing their job. They convinced Kashmiris travelling by flight out of the state to carry the photos stored in drives and disk and give it to their office in Delhi.
