Over 3.66 lakh COVID cases, 3,754 deaths in India in a day


The health ministry on Monday informed that over 3.66 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.26 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 17.01 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 6.89 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.46 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 3,754 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,46,116. Previously, the death toll had crossed 4,000-mark on May 8.

1.86 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.26 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 37.45 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 16.53 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.86 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 82.39 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May.

Over 30.37 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 30.37 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 19.23 lakh samples were tested on May 5. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.20 lakh samples was tested on April 29. Over 14.74 lakh samples were tested on May 9.

3,754 deaths in a day

Of the 3,754 deaths reported in a day, 572 deaths are from Maharashtra, 236 from Tamil Nadu and 490 from Karnataka. Ninety-two deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 294 deaths and West Bengal reported 124 deaths. Gujarat reported 121 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 86 deaths. Delhi reported 273 deaths. Punjab reported 191 deaths.

Nineteen deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 159 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 67 deaths. Fifty-four deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 35 deaths.

Forty-eight fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 180 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 97 deaths. Puducherry reported 26 deaths and 68 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
