Over 3.11 lakh COVID-19 cases, 4,077 deaths in a day in India


The health ministry on Sunday informed that over 3.11 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.46 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 18.22 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 17.33 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.70 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 4,077 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,70,284. Previously, the death toll had crossed 4,205-mark on May 12.

Over 2.07 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.46 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 36.18 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 14.66 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.07 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 84.25 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 31.48 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 31.48 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 19.83 lakh samples were tested on May 11. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.23 lakh samples was tested on May 5. Over 18.32 lakh samples were tested on May 15.

4,077 deaths in a day

Of the 4,077 deaths reported in a day, 960 deaths are from Maharashtra, 303 from Tamil Nadu and 349 from Karnataka. Ninety-eight deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 281 deaths and West Bengal reported 144 deaths. Gujarat reported 95 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 72 deaths. Delhi reported 337 deaths. Punjab reported 216 deaths.

Twenty-one deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 149 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 73 deaths. Sixty-three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 32 deaths.

Sixty-three fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 197 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 65 deaths. Puducherry reported 20 deaths and 96 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
