India on Saturday morning recorded the single highest spike in the number of Covid19 cases in a day. The country saw 2,293 new cases being reported in the last 24 hours taking the total number of such cases to 37,336. 71 new deaths were reported during the same period taking the total to 1,218, health ministry officials said.
As of now, India has 26,167 active cases while 9,950 people have been cured. As per health ministry data, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra (11,506) followed by Gujarat (4,721), Delhi (3,738) and Madhya Pradesh (2,719). This is the third time that over 1,500 new COVID-19 cases are being reported in a week. As many as 1,909 cases were reported on Tuesday and 1,700 on Wednesday nationwide.
India has been under a lockdown for over 40 days now in an attempt to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the country. The government on Friday announced another two week extension for the lockdown that was to come to an end on May 3 although it did allow for certain activities in the green and orange zones. The country has been divided into green, orange and red zones based on the risk profile of a region for Covid19.
