Close 21 lakh people in Gujarat have registered with the local district authorities across the state to return to their respective home. The Centre had allowed movement of migrants, students, and stranded tourists from one state to another by bus and later by trains too. As per the notification, those who wished to travel needed to register with the district officials and get the requisite pass before leaving the state.
Of the total number of people who have registered with the state, 5.46 lakh are from Uttar Pradesh, most of whom are migrant labourers followed by 3.83 lakh from Bihar. Migrants from Odisha (3.46 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (2.96) and Rajasthan (1.91lakh) have also registered. Migrants from 25 states of Indian who had been working in Gujarat have registered with the district authorities to return home. Most of the migrants in Gujarat work in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Bharuch. 11,000 migrants from Nepal have also registered to return home.
Several places in Gujarat have seen clashes between migrants and police as the former demanded to be sent home. Most of the clashes were reported from Surat while one was reported in Rajkot too. Pictures of several migrants trying to reach home by foot after they were unable to get a transport also did the rounds of social media.
