20,346 fresh COVID-19 cases, 222 deaths in a day in India


The health ministry on Thursday informed that 20,346 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.03 crore.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.50 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 222 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,50,336.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

1 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.03 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 2.28 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is above 2 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.36 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 17.84 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 17.84 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 9.37 lakh tests were carried out on January 6.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

222 deaths in a day

Of the 222 deaths reported in a day, 66 deaths are from Maharashtra, 11 from Tamil Nadu and six from Karnataka. Three deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 22 from West Bengal and eight from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported four deaths and Delhi 16 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported eight deaths. Punjab has reported eight deaths.

No death has been registered in Odisha, whereas five deaths were reported from Bihar. Three deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Four deaths have been reported from Rajasthan. Three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir.

No fatality has been reported from Assam and five deaths have been reported from Uttarakhand. No death has been reported from Puducherry. Two deaths have been reported from Jharkhand, whereas 25 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
