20,035 COVID-19 cases, 256 deaths reported in a day in India


The health ministry on Friday informed that 20,035 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.02 crore.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.48 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 256 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,48,994.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

98.83 lakh patients recovered

Of the over 1.02 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 2.54 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is above 2 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 98.83 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.08 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 17.31 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 17.31 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 10.62 lakh tests were carried out on December 31.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

256 deaths in a day

Of the 256 deaths reported in a day, 58 deaths are from Maharashtra, 13 from Tamil Nadu and nine from Karnataka. Four deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 29 from West Bengal and 12 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported four deaths and Delhi 13 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 11 deaths. Punjab has reported 10 deaths.

Two deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas four deaths were reported from Bihar. Three deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Seven deaths have been reported from Rajasthan. Three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir.

Two fatalities have been reported from Assam and five deaths have been reported from Uttarakhand. No death has been reported from Puducherry. Three deaths have been reported from Jharkhand, whereas 30 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
