Over 2.54 lakh people succumbed to COVID-19 in India, 4,205 died yesterday


The health ministry on Wednesday informed that over 3.48 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.33 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 17.52 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 24.46 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.54 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 4,205 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,54,197. It is the highest single-day surge in deaths reported in the country since the pandemic began last year. Previously, the death toll had crossed 4,000-mark on May 8.

1.93 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.33 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 37.04 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 15.87 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.93 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 83.04 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 30.75 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 30.75 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 19.83 lakh samples were tested on May 11. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.23 lakh samples was tested on May 5.

4,205 deaths in a day

Of the 4,205 deaths reported in a day, 793 deaths are from Maharashtra, 298 from Tamil Nadu and 480 from Karnataka. 108 deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 301 deaths and West Bengal reported 132 deaths. Gujarat reported 118 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 94 deaths. Delhi reported 347 deaths. Punjab reported 214 deaths.

Eighteen deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 169 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 72 deaths. Fifty-six deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 32 deaths.

Eighty-five fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 118 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 103 deaths. Puducherry reported 30 deaths and 79 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
