Eighteen people who attended the funeral of a COVID-19 patient have tested positive for the infection in Ulhasnagar, Thane of Maharashtra. A news agency said that in violation of prohibitory orders, at least 70 people had attended the funeral of a deceased COVID-19 patient. The woman had tested positive post her death and her body was handed over to her family with specific instructions to not open the bag. Officials told the news agency that they however opened the body bag to perform the last rites.
Police were informed of the violation who in turn informed civic officials. They then tested the 70 people who attended the funeral. Eighteen of them were reported to be positive. A case has been registered against the deceased’s family for violating provisions of the Epidemic Act, the report said.
Earlier in a similar incident, the relatives of a deceased patient unwrapped her body for last rites resulting in 20 people contracting the infection. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of fresh cases in a single day on Saturday. As many as 2,682 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 62,228. Mumbai accounted for 50% of the new cases being reported.
