15,968 COVID-19 cases reported in a day in India

The health ministry on Wednesday informed that 15,968 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.04 crore.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.51 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 202 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,51,529.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

1.01 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.04 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 2.14 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is above 2 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.01 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.51 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 18.34 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 18.34 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 8.36 lakh tests were carried out on January 12.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

202 deaths in a day

Of the 202 deaths reported in a day, 50 deaths are from Maharashtra, eight from Tamil Nadu and five from Karnataka. Two deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 18 from West Bengal and 10 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported three deaths and Delhi 16 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported eight deaths. Punjab has reported nine deaths.

Two deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas four deaths were reported from Bihar. Three deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Three deaths have been reported from Rajasthan. One death has been reported from Jammu and Kashmir.

No fatality has been reported from Assam and 11 deaths have been reported from Uttarakhand. One death has been reported from Puducherry. No death has been reported from Jharkhand, whereas 25 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
