Fifteen migrant labourers sleeping on a footpath were crushed to death in Gujarat’s Surat after a truck ran over them. The horrific incident took place near Kosamba village on the Kim-Mandvi Road in the wee hours on Tuesday.

Sources said that all the victims were from Rajasthan’s Banswara and were working as daily labourers. They were sleeping on a footpath during the night. The truck driver apparently lost control of the vehicle after it hit sugarcane hanging out of a tractor-trolley coming from the opposite direction.

Surat SP Usha Rada said, “The truck’s front window pane shattered on impact, which blocked the driver’s vision. The truck then veered off the road and crashed into the sleeping labourers.”

Notably, three people died while availing treatment in a nearby hospital, whereas 12 died on the spot. In all, 18 people were sleeping at the accident site. Surat Police have arrested the truck driver.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the incident. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted: “The loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest.”

PM Modi also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for each injured labourer.
