Over 100 doctors in Rajkot have tested positive for COVID-19 while overall 150 doctors across the state have been infected by the disease. Around 50 doctors working in AMC-run COVID-19 hospitals have also tested positive.
The AMC had recently begun testing of resident doctors working in government hospitals in the city. The Rajkot unit of IMA has also issued a red alert for doctors in Rajkot. Dr Jay Dhirwani, president Rajkot IMA said that there are over 1,800 doctors and over 100 of them getting infected is a matter of concern.
Earlier, the respective chapters of IMA in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai had issued a red alert for their representatives. Similar alerts were also put out for Surat and Ahmedabad some months ago.
The association has also asked doctors to ensure a 6 ft distance and to sanitise their hands every two hours. N-95 masks should also be worn all the time.
It has also advised doctors to ensure that patients who undergo surgery should mandatorily have COVDI-19 tests. Also not more than one person should accompany a patient in a hospital to avoid crowding the place.
After so many doctors fell ill, the government shifted 70 doctors from Ahmedabad to the Civil Hospital in Rajkot.
The AMC had also carried out voluntary testing of doctors at all government hospitals. More than 50 doctors at LG Hospital, SVP and Shardaben had reportedly tested positive.
Officials suspect that the rise in non-COVID patients in government hospitals, many of whom could be asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, and doctors interacting with them during OPDs could be the reason why so many doctors are testing positive.
Gujarat COVID-19 figures on Thursday touched 1,09,630 as the state recorded 1,332 new cases and 15 fatalities.
