India’s records 1.84 lakh COVID-19 cases, 1,027 deaths in a day


The health ministry on Wednesday informed that over 1.84 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.38 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases since the pandemic began last year.

The ministry also informed that over 11.11 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 26.46 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.

The second-highest single-day surge of over 1.68 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported on April 12. The third-highest single-day surge of 1.61 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported in India on April 13, 2021. The fourth-highest surge of 1.52 lakh COVID-19 cases was recorded on April 11. It is followed by 1.45 lakh cases reported on April 10.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.72 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 1,027 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,72,085. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day in the past six months.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

1.23 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.38 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 13.65 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 9.84 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.23 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 88.92 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 26.06 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 26.06 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 14.11 lakh tests were carried out on April 13.

1,027 deaths in a day

Of the 1,027 deaths reported in a day, 281 deaths are from Maharashtra, 18 from Tamil Nadu and 67 from Karnataka. Ten deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 85 deaths and West Bengal reported 20 deaths. Gujarat reported 67 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 40 deaths. Delhi reported 81 deaths. Punjab reported 50 deaths.

Two deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 28 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 14 deaths. Three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported eight deaths.

One fatality has been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 13 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 29 deaths. Puducherry reported three deaths and 20 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
