1.73 lakh new COVID cases in India in last 24 hours, lowest per day case since April 12


India recorded 173,790 new COVID cases, the lowest since April 12, and 3,617 fatalities due to the disease in the last 24 hours. This is also the second consecutive day that the country is seeing less than 2 lakh cases.

2,84,601 recoveries were also recorded during the last 24 hours taking the total recovery to 90.80%. The active caseload stands at 22,28,724.
Maharashtra reported 1,022 new fatalities while Tamil Nadu had 486.

Tamil Nadu recorded over 31,000 new cases while Karnataka had close to 23,000.

COVID Vaccination in India

The Centre on Friday said it aims to vaccinate the entire country by the end of this year. 20.86 crore COVID vaccine doses have been administered so far with over 28 lakh vaccines being administered on Friday alone.

The Centre earlier in a statement said production of Covaxin vaccine will reach six crores by July/August under Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0 Mission COVID Suraksha.

Kerala has allowed those travelling abroad to take the second dose of the Covishield vaccine after four to six weeks of the first one. The existing norms mandate that the second dose be given after 12-16-weeks of the first one.

It has also included those travelling abroad for jobs and studies among priority groups for vaccination.

The same facility has been extended in Mumbai by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. It too has said that those going abroad for studies would be given priority among the 18-44-year age group for vaccination. It has also set aside three days a week (Monday to Wednesday) for the vaccination of such candidates without pre-registration, at specified centers.

COVID lockdowns

Delhi has said COVID lockdown restrictions will be lifted from Monday onwards. Delhi has been under a lockdown since April 19 following a surge in cases. Maharashtra has extended lockdown restrictions till June 1 and it will later be eased in a phased manner.
