India records over 1.65 lakh COVID-19 cases, 3,460 deaths in a day

The Union health ministry on Sunday informed that over 1.65 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.78 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 21.20 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 30.35 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.25 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 3,460 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,25,972. Previously, the death toll had touched the 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.54 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.78 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 21.14 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 7.58 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.54 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 91.225 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 34.31 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 34.31 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.57 lakh samples was tested on May 26. Over 20.63 lakh samples were tested on May 29.

3,460 deaths in a day

Of the 3,460 deaths reported in a day, 832 deaths are from Maharashtra, 486 from Tamil Nadu and 492 from Karnataka. 104 deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 155 deaths and West Bengal also reported 148 deaths. Gujarat reported 29 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 68 deaths. Delhi reported 122 deaths. Punjab reported 125 deaths.

Thirty-five deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 70 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 48 deaths. Forty-six deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 21 deaths.

Seventy-seven fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 99 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 13 deaths. Puducherry reported 21 deaths and 198 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
